Cargo: Middle Passage

A Permanent Interactive Installation

The Cargo:  Middle Passage installation is a permanent installation that will leave an educational and artistic legacy in our community for our children and future generations.  It documents a piece of American and world history that must be remembered to be healed and exemplifies the immutable will to survive by documenting despair, celebrating hope and a people who prevailed in the face of great hardship.

“ if ….history could be told in such a way that those chains of the past, those shackles that physically bound us to together against our wills could, in the telling, become spiritual links that willingly bind us together now and in the future – then that most painful Middle Passage could become, ironically, a positive connecting line to all of us …”                Tom Feelings, artist and author

The King Arts Complex’s Cargo: The Middle Passage, interactive learning area will center on the 4 foot by 23-foot oil painting “Cargo” by Ron Anderson, a faculty member at Columbus College of Art and Design and Northwest Career Center.  The artist has consistently created large works of art to draw the viewer in as a part of the action, and in this work he brings the viewer “up close and personal” with this event in the history of humankind.  This powerful artwork will be mounted in the King Arts Complex’s corridor connecting the East Wing with the West Wing (in effect, a middle passage).
