Echoes of Our Ancestors is a thought provoking exhibition that celebrates the rich, diverse and artistic legacy of past and present African American artists.  The artistic excellence of the work reflects a passion and sensibility greatly inspired and influenced by the artists’ mentors, distinguished art educators and scholars. Featured in the exhibition sill be works by artists as Robert Stull, David McDonald, Pheoris West, Paul Goodnight, Margaret Burroughs, Tyrone Jetter, Carl Owens, Napoleon Jones-Henderson and Tom Feelings, P.H Polk, James Van der Zee, Chester Higgins, Gordon Parks and John Biggers. Featured works include paintings, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics and printmaking.    The art produced is of extraordinary beauty, meaning and power that vibrates and leaves an enduring cultural legacy.

 

Curator’s Talk

 The first of an annual new series, Legends and Legacies examines the ancestral continuum of the rich and diverse artistry of African Americans by paying tribute to nationally recognized artists and exploring the influence of their achievements on others through performances by artists impacted by the work of these “legends”.

 

The 2007 legends honored include Ruby Dee, legendary Cleveland native, a phenomenal actress and two-time Emmy-award winner; Mari Evans, poet, dramatist, short fiction writer, children's writer, editor, essayist, and lecturer; Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet, writer, activist, and educator; Odetta, recipient of the Presidential Metal of Arts Award, is considered the Queen of American folk music; Sonya Sanchez, poet, playwright, and cultural icon; and, Val Gray Ward, internationally-known singer, poet, actress, historical chronicler, producer and theater personality.

 

Each has a long history of actively participating as warrior women for human rights, social justice and cultural democracy thus they are perfect recipients for The King Arts Complex’s Legends & Legacies Award. Their contributions in writing, poetry, film, folk music, acting is unparalleled.  They have consistently and aggressively served as guardians of Black culture, equality and they have served as role models for us to be the change we hope to see.

 

On Thursday, October 11, 2007, the program and ceremony will include Lunch with the Legends and conversation among the six recipients; and, an evening, black tie ceremony, at which time each will be honored and presented with a special award and honorarium.

 

The evening program will be a kaleidoscope of music, poetry, dance, and dramatic readings focused on the significant legacy created by the phenomenal legends being honored along with the formal presentation of their award created by award winning, national artist, Steve Hazard.

‘Just Another Girl on the IRT’ by Leslie Harris

Chantel Mitchell (Ariyan Johnson), a hip, articulate, high-school girl in Brooklyn, is determined not to become "just another girl on the IRT" (the IRT is one of NYC's subway lines). She dreams of medical school, a family, and an escape from the generational poverty and street-corner life her friends seem to have accepted as their lot. But personal and sexual challenges confront Chantel on her way to fulfilling her dreams. Dialogue moderated by Tamara Hamilton, Program Supervisor for Teen Education and Employment, The Godman Guild.

Back by popular demand…Otis Sallid’s Gospel!Gospel!Gospel! returns for an encore performance. Award-winning choreographer, director and producer Otis Sallid has created a hand clapping, soul stirring, inspirational evolution of Black History through a musical revue of Gospel music and its influence on secular music.  If you want to experience American history told through Black music all in one evening, then you are sure to enjoy this soul-stirring performance.  This hard-driving, foot-stomping, hand-clapping show features music made from world notables like Clara Ward, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Thomas Dorsey, the Clark Sisters, Yolanda Adams, Sam Cooke and Ray Charles.

Mother Africa is home to more than fifty countries. It is a continent that is culturally rich and ethnically diverse.  African design is often characterized by vibrant color, texture and pattern.  The En Vogue exhibition introduces methods of design that incorporate the stylish traditions found in African elements into contemporary American living spaces.   Several intimate environments will be created in the Elijah Pierce Gallery that will demonstrate how to create unique spaces that are connected to the soul and spirit of a profound and ancient continent---Africa!

William R Sands, Creative Director for ethnicity design will lead a workshop on the principles of world design.  Relax and sip a glass of wine while Mr. Sands delivers a lecture and slide presentation of color, textiles and design elements from the Southern Hemisphere of Africa.  He will focus on living environments that reflect culture, class and comfort.

Akeelah & the Bee

Eleven year-old Akeelah Anderson's life is not easy: her father is dead, her mom ignores her, her brother runs with the local gang bangers. She's smart, but her environment threatens to strangle her aspirations. Responding to a threat by her school's principal, Akeelah participates in a spelling bee to avoid detention for her many absences. Much to her surprise and embarrassment, she wins. Her principal asks her to seek coaching from an English professor named Dr. Larabee for the more prestigious regional bee. As the possibility of making it all the way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee looms, Akeelah could provide her community with someone to rally around and be proud of.  But there are many obstacles to overcome. Join us for an interactive panel discussion will be facilitated by Zoraba Ross, Principal, Groveport Madison High School

We invite the Central Ohio community to enjoy the Soul of the City---The King Arts Complex—as we offer a vast menu of cultural activities to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  NBC 4 anchors and reporters, including Mike Jackson, Jym Ganahl, Anietra Hamper and Bob Nunnally will be there to greet guests and introduce the live performances in the theatre throughout the afternoon.

 “For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide/When  the Rainbow is Enuf”

Denison University Presents for Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf in collaboration with The King Arts Complex. In recognition of the 26th  anniversary of this performance at Denison University, and in honor of Black History  Month and Womens History Month, "For Colored Girls..." will be directed by Ron Pitts of Ujiima Theater and include an all Denison student cast and crew.

 

This award winning play by Ntozake Shange, extraordinary "choreopoem", is a dramatic elegy for black women with an undercurrent message for everyone. Its theme is not sorrow...but courage. Its strength is its passion and its reality. It is an unforgettable collage of one woman’s view of the women of her race, facing everything from rape to unrequited love. Wisdom and naiveté go hand in hand. Wounds and dreams intermingle; strong passions melt into simple courage.

First Thursday Arts: ‘Unchained Memories:

Readings From the Slave Narratives”

 Relive the midst of the Great Depression, from 1936 to 1938, more than 2,000 interviews with one-time slaves conducted for the Work Projects Administration (WPA) via its Federal Writers' Project.  The transcripts form a unique firsthand record of slave life. Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives presents dramatic selections from the extensive Slave Narrative Collection through on-camera readings by over a dozen actors, interspersed with archival photographs, music, film and period images. This HBO documentary brings the selected words of these former slaves to life through the voices of celebrated African-American actors. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the actors sometimes add their own anecdotes and editorial comments, giving a contemporary and

emotional perspective to the documentary's serious subject matter.

The Ohio State University’s President and Provost’s Diversity Lecture and Cultural Art Series presents a lecture by collector, Robert Steele in conjunction with The King Arts Complex, the Ohio State University’s Office of the Provost and the Frank Hale Cultural Center’s presentation of the exhibition Successions.

 

Successions: Prints by renowned African American Artists from the Jean and Robert Steele Collection is an impressive bold collection centered on the art of the print, including etchings, monoprints, lithographs, linocuts and silkscreens.  Jean and Robert Steele have ventured across media lines to include collage and mixed media creations as well.  The exhibition focuses primarily on works that some of the nation’s leading Black artists have created over the last three decades.  Artists such as Romare Bearden, Bob Blackburn, Elisabeth Catlett,  James L. Wells, and William T. Williams to name a few of the forty-five artists who represent the significant aspects of  progress printmaking has made over the last quarter of the twentieth century. Works from the collection are exhibited at both The King Arts Complex and The Frank Hale Cultural Center.

Come and enjoy the mesmerizing rhythm of the drum and the electrifying performance that is testimony to the art of dance.  Muntu Dance Theater of Chicago builds on African, Caribbean and African-American cultural traditions to create an atmosphere of communal participation encouraging and inspiring audiences to join in the celebration.  MUNTU’s cast of expert dancers and master, musicians combined with awesome choreography and authentic stunning costumes, has been known to bring audiences to their feet and out to dance in the aisles.

The Virgin Arts Project Exhibition

The Links Incorporated, Twin Rivers Chapter Arts Facet will host the exhibition, The Virgin Arts Project.  This exhibit continues a tradition of recognizing outstanding art by youth which began in 2001.  The goal of the exhibit is to identify promising young African Americans with visual art talent that attend Columbus Public Schools and Central Ohio Colleges.  The Twin Rivers Chapter of the Links will provide scholarships to exceptional African American visual art students selected by a panel of jurors.  Their mission is to provide a forum for showcasing art and recognizing the young artists in the community.

First Thursday Arts: ‘Brother Outsider

Life of Bayard Ruskin’

Thursday March 6, 2008     8 PM

The King Arts Complex, in collaboration with OutLook Magazine, presents Brother Outsider – Life of Bayard Rustin.  This screening documents master strategist and tireless activist, Bayard Rustin. He is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the United States. He helped mold Martin Luther King, Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence.

Despite these achievements, Rustin was threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions, largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era. BROTHER OUTSIDER presents a feature-length documentary portrait, focusing on Rustin’s activism for peace, racial equality, economic justice and human rights. Come celebrate the spring season at the King Arts Complex.  Planting crops of vegetation has been a long time tradition of most African countries. Participants will learn about the history of gardening as it relates to the African and African American cultures. Participants will plant their own spring gardens and will prepare meals from the Spring harvest.

The story of Black-Jewish relations in the United States is a long and complex one.... African-American newspapers were among the first in the U.S. to denounce Nazism... Members of the Jewish community were among those who worked to establish the NAACP in 1909.  Filmmakers, Joel Sucher and Steven Fischler created FROM SWASTIKA TO JIM CROW to instill  hope and remind us of a time in U.S. history when the two communities worked together to create a better future for us all. - David Horowitz, Washington Review

Red has an unmistakable, alluring mystery about it.  Its boldness draws your emotions and often entices celebration. Come see the color red take form as Women of Visions, Inc. (WOV) presents “Living Red: Are you Feelin’ Me,” an exhibition of striking visual works created by the members of WOV.  This exhibition will explore the artists’ personal journey, history, and memory of the color red as it relates to African American women artists living and working in America. The work produced will be of a diverse sampling of vivid artistic styles and media including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, fiber, and jewelry. Each artist expresses their personal interpretation of how the color red related to them. 

 

WOV, founded in 1981, is a Pittsburgh-based visual arts collective of African American women visual artists that share a common interest and passion for their art and history by promoting and educating the community and women artists around the world.  This organization mounts collaborative exhibitions with museums, corporations, individuals and arts groups regionally and nationally.  They have also published their own exhibition catalogs, posters, publications and are the proud producer of 3 symposiums, and most recently, the Migrations of the African Diaspora Film Series.

It's up to Judge Wallabee and some very silly jurors to decide, after hearing testimony from Goldee, the bickering Three Bears, and surprise witness Merwin the Big Bad Wolf, among others. Goldie’s freedom lies in the balance.

The fun and interesting twist on Goldielocks and the Three Bears is directed by Desmond “Storm E” Jones known for this work with Karamu Theater in Cleveland Ohio.  Storm E will bring each character to life and have you laughing with this comical trial.

African Safari Summer Camp 

June 9-August 15th    -       7AM-6PM

Field Trip:  $25

Program fee per week: $85, non member $80 KAC member

The program is designed for youth ages 4 - 12

The word Safari means…travel.  During the Summer Camp program we will be taking an imaginary Safari to several countries of West Africa to experience the music, food and dynamic visual art forms of that region. This is a 10 week safari and a great adventure for children and youth 4-12 years of age.

Docent Program

The docent program trains youth from Middle school and High school about the current gallery exhibitions. Youth learn about the artists, the art works, the history of the Complex and the area. They lead tours and discuss artistic styles and medium. The docent program is sponsored by The Twin Rivers Chapter of the Links. Inc.

Become a part of history by joining the King Arts Complex for the 10th Annual Heritage Concert Series.  Once known as the “Cradle of Jazz” the Mount Vernon corridor will swing with the sounds of various musical genres, including jazz, classic R&B and blues.  This season a two disc CD will be produced with musicians from the last ten (10) years of the Heritage Concert Series.  Enjoy performances by an all-star line-up of some of Central Ohio’s hottest musicians.
